The St. Dominic’s Children’s Home , originally known as the Belmont Orphanage, was founded in the late 19th century by a Dominican priest. It is now managed by the Dominican Sisters. There are three Homes that SDHC occupies.

The Children’s Ark has agreed to fund/assist the Home for ‘boys at risk, ’at Barataria and has engaged the Army Reserve to construct an area within the basement to accommodate a ‘home schooling’ pilot programme, in order to address the boys cognitive gaps and special learning needs, whether they are physically or mentally challenged, affording them a better chance and opportunity in life.

The ‘home schooling programme’ is being run by certified and competent, experienced  teachers.  The Children’s Ark will then accommodate the second part of their programme.  A vocational training facility where the boys will learn a trade/skill i.e  carpentry, plumbing, electrical, agriculture etc. These will enable them to be self sustainable and independent.

They will also learn how to deal with social ills such as sexuality and morality which will teach them to make right and positive choices in life.

The first phase of the project is completed, while the secomd phase should be completed by the end of 2017.
